About Ragi Malt

Malt means germinated grains. So ragi malt is a preparation of sprouted ragi flour in water or milk. Traditionally, ragi grains are sprouted, then dried in shade and milled. The flour of sprouted ragi is cooked with milk or water to prepare ragi malt, which serves as the perfect combination of taste and health. Ragi grains may be milled without first sprouting them, but flour of sprouted grains is always more nutritious, and also easier to digest.

How to Prepare Salted Ragi Porridge

  • Add 4 tablespoons of ragi flour to a cooking pot.
  • Add 1.5 cups of water to the pot.
  • Mix well so that the flour blends completely with water.
  • Turn on the flame and start stirring the mixture.
  • Cook on medium flame and keep stirring till the mixture gets a porridge-like consistency and turns shiny.
  • Add buttermilk and salt, after cooking ragi flour in water. You may temper this mixture with curry leaves, cumin, mustard and chillies.

How to Prepare Sweet Ragi Malt

  • For a sweet version of this healthy snack, add a sweetener, after cooking ragi flour in water.
  • Add jaggery or any sweetener. Then remove from the flame.
  • Now add milk to this mixture. Preferably add pre-boiled milk. If adding non-boiled milk, get the mixture to a boil, then remove the preparation from heat. Stir well.
  • You may add a powder of almonds and/or other dry fruits to add to the nutritional quotient of this recipe.

However, it is advisable to consult your pediatrician before starting to feed ragi malt to your baby.
