Nestled in the hills and trees with a river flowing by its side, stands a sacred, old temple called Kainchi Dham. Kainchi Dham was not simply built as a temple. It grew out of Neem Karoli Baba’s relationship with the place and his devotion to Hanuman. It was established by Shri Neem Karoli Baba in 1964 in the Kainchi village located on the Nainital Almora road. Interestingly, the temple is between two hills that cross each other as if cutting one another in the shape of a scissor, hence the name ‘Kainchi’ Dham.

What makes Kainchi unusual is that it’s not only about a building or a pilgrimage site. It is about the saint who lived and served here, the devotees who carried his teachings forward, and the many stories that gradually gave the place an identity far beyond the hills of Kumaon.

Here are some travel tips to get here and places to see in and around this tranquil temple.

Visiting Kainchi Dham: What You Need to Know Before You Go

  • You could take a taxi or bus from Nainital to Almora to reach Kainchi Dham. It is located just 17 kms away from Nainital on the Almora road. Kathgodam located 37 kms away from Kainchi Dham is the closest railway station while Pantnagar Airport, which is 71 kms away, is the nearest airport from Kainchi Dham.
  • So, if you decide to take a flight, reach the Pantnagar airport and from there, take a taxi or any other local transport mode to get to Kainchi Dham.
  • If you decide to come by train, take a bus or taxi from the Kathgodam railway station.
  • Going by road is also an option worth considering, since there is a good network of roads heading to Kainchi Dham. Come to Nainital and from there, take a taxi or a shared vehicle, Kainchi Dham is just 20 kms away. The other way is to come to Delhi, then take a train or bus to Kathgodam, and then a taxi or bus to Kainchi Dham. Private taxis can also be hired to reach here.
  • Kainchi Dham is less than 300 kms away from major Uttarakhand cities like Haridwar and Hrishikesh.
  • The driving distance from Delhi to Kainchi Dham is 339 kms and that from Noida to Kainchi Dham is 309 kms.
  • From famous tourist places like Nainital and Bhimtal in Uttarakhand, Kainchi Dham is just 20 kms away. So, during a trip to any of the Uttarakhand cities, especially those mentioned here, you could consider visiting Kainchi Dham to experience a sense of calm and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

Best Places to See Around Kainchi Dham

‘What is Kainchi Dham famous for?’ if you ask, Neem Karoli Baba ashram is the obvious answer. The main temple is dedicated to Neem Karoli Baba, who was a highly respected saint in India and abroad. There is a marble structure in which there is a statue of Neem Karoli Baba wrapped in a purple blanket, and the place is lit with candles and incense.

Visitors seek blessings of Neem Karoli Baba, and pray and meditate at this spiritual site. The temple is well-decorated and visitors can take part in bhajans and sathsang (spiritual discourses) that are organized in the temple.

Hanuman Temple is another tourist attraction at Kainchi Dham. Located next to Neem Karoli Baba temple, this temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the monkey God worshipped for his strength and devoted nature. Visitors pray to Lord Hanuman, seek his blessings and protection, for which they visit this place in the Kainchi Dham Complex. For Maharajji’s followers, Hanuman embodies devotion, service, strength and surrender. His presence is central to understanding why Kainchi Dham became so significant. The Hanuman temple remains at the heart of the ashram, drawing devotees to pray and seek blessings.

Located at the entrance of Kainchi Dham is the Vaishnavi Temple, dedicated to Vaishnavi Devi. It is a newly built temple, which is popular among devotees who come to seek blessings of the goddess and pray or meditate in this sacred space.

Kainchi Dham: Intriguing Facts

What is the story behind Kainchi Dham? As per a legend, Neem Karoli Baba visited the site in the 1960s, before which he had a dream about this place which led him to name it as Kainchi Dham, which means two sharp bends.

This Hanuman temple features the idol of Hanumanji, which Maharajji made with his own hands.

The Kainchi Dham complex consists of three main temples, offices and quarters for stay. Those residing or visiting here, are given meals that primarily include lentils, potatoes and rice. Devotees are seen helping the visitors explore the site. Prayers are organized in the mornings and evenings.

In the 1970s, Steve Jobs visited Kainchi Dham. Later, Mark Zuckerberg also visited this place. Intrigued by Neem Karoli Baba, they visited Kainchi Dham to explore his life and work, and are known to have meditated in the ashram and experienced the tranquil and spiritual vibe of this place.

The famous cricketer Virat Kohli and popular actress Anushka Sharma who is his wife, also visited the Kainchi Dham temple.

Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay and Larry Page of Google are known to have visited Kainchi Dham Ashram.

Every year on June 15th, a fair is held at the ashram which draws several locals and tourists. This event called Bhandara has a footfall of about 100,000 people.

There are wishing bells of different sizes in the temple. Devotees believe that ringing them would fulfil their wishes.

The best time to visit Kainchi Dham is from March to June, as the weather that time is pleasant. The temple and ashram are open an all days of the week including public holidays and the timings for visit are from 5.00 am to 4.00 pm. Visiting this place on Tuesdays is considered to be more sacred.

What is the dress code for Kainchi Dham? Wearing short or revealing clothes is not allowed as this type of dressing is considered disrespectful. Devotees are advised to wear traditional attire or clothing that covers the body well.

Photography and videography inside the temple premises are prohibited.

How to get permission to visit Kainchi Dham and can you stay inside the ashram? To visit and stay inside Maharaj ji’s ashram, you have to write a letter requesting a stay and send it with a reference letter from a senior devotee and a recent photograph of yourself, to the Kainchi Dham manager at kainchidham@gmail.com. Usually, visitors are allowed to stay for a maximum of 3-days at the ashram.

For devotees, Kainchi Dham is more than a place of worship. It is a place to pause, pray and feel close to Maharajji and Hanumanji; to sit in silence, reflect and find a sense of inner peace. Surrounded by the quiet hills and the flowing river, the ashram carries a stillness that many believe is deepened by Maharajji’s presence and the devotion of those who continue to come here.

Some arrive seeking blessings, others in search of peace, while many simply feel drawn to this sacred place. For devotees, that quiet pull is often reason enough to return.

When I was younger, yoga was something people did on a mat.

You sat down. You folded yourself into some shape that looked suspiciously uncomfortable. You breathed in when somebody told you to breathe in, breathed out when somebody told you to breathe out, and if you could touch your toes without making a sound of protest, you considered yourself quite accomplished.

Things have changed.

Today, there are yoga studios, yoga apps, yoga videos, yoga subscriptions, yoga challenges and, I am fairly certain, somebody somewhere is teaching yoga on a paddleboard.

And why not?

But somewhere amidst all this abundance, I began wondering about something rather simple.

What does it mean to actually learn yoga?

There is a difference between showing up for a yoga class, following a practice on a screen, and actually learning the practice for yourself.

That last one is what caught my attention. Learning it properly.

And that question is what led me to Classical Hatha Yoga programs taught by teachers individually certified by Sadhguru Gurukulam.

At first glance, the idea may sound rather elaborate. But the principle behind it is beautifully simple:

You learn the practice. Then the practice becomes yours.

There is something deeply old-fashioned about that.

And I mean that as a compliment.

The idea is to learn a specific, structured practice and then continue practising it on your own.

No constant reinvention.

No changing the sequence because a new trend has appeared on Instagram.

The method remains unchanged – structured by Sadhguru, with nothing added and nothing removed.

And honestly, I rather like that.

When you are learning something, you may practise for years, you don’t necessarily want somebody reinventing it every Tuesday.

hatha yoga mumbai nashik

Sometimes, what isn’t there matters too!

There is no music, no props to depend on, and no teacher physically pushing your body into a posture. You learn through instruction and demonstration, allowing the practice to arise through your own awareness.

And then there is silence.

Ah, silence.

The poor thing has become rather unpopular these days.

We fill every empty moment with something – music in the car, podcasts while walking, videos while eating. If the phone goes quiet for 10 minutes, we begin wondering whether something is wrong with it.

So yes, sitting in silence and turning one’s attention inward can feel almost revolutionary these days.

The practice is also done on an empty stomach, as prescribed for the programs. All these conditions serve a purpose: to minimize distractions and create an environment where your attention can move inward rather than constantly being pulled outward.

For a little while, there is simply you and your experience.

“But I have never done yoga before.”

Good. You don’t need to arrive as an experienced yogi.

“I am not flexible.”
Also, fine.

“I don’t know which program to choose.”
Now that is a perfectly sensible question.

There are several Classical Hatha Yoga practices offered through these programs, including Surya Kriya, Surya Shakti, Angamardhana, Bhuta Shuddhi and Yoga Asanas.

Each is a distinct practice. You can check the website for the details of the programs currently being offered, or simply speak to the team if you have questions about which one may be right for you.

You don’t have to know everything before you begin.

And this is where it gets interesting!

You don’t necessarily have to travel somewhere far away to explore a structured yogic practice.
These programs are conducted as in-person programs in Mumbai and Nashik, with the particular practices and dates changing from month to month.

One month, you may find Surya Kriya.
Another may bring Angamardhana.
Another may have Yogasanas.
The schedule changes. The opportunity keeps returning.

So, if you have been searching for Hatha Yoga classes in Navi Mumbai, Hatha Yoga classes in Mumbai, or Hatha Yoga classes in Nashik, perhaps you don’t need to wait for the perfect time.

Perhaps you simply need to see what is happening next.

Who teaches these programs?

This is something I would want to know before attending any serious learning program. Who is teaching me?

Every teacher at Yogavani is individually certified by Sadhguru Gurukulam, a classical Hatha Yoga institution accredited by the Yoga Certification Board, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

The teacher’s role is not to reinvent the practice according to personal preference or current trends, but to transmit it as it is structured.

Different teacher. Different city. Same method.
There is something reassuring about that.

And perhaps that is one of the quiet strengths of this approach.

Learn it once. Then practise.

This is probably the part that stayed with me.
You learn.
You practise.
You continue.

The intention is to receive a complete practice that you can continue on your own, rather than remain dependent on a weekly class to tell you what comes next.

Is it for everyone?

Some people want a weekly fitness class. Some enjoy movement with music. Some prefer following a video at home. All perfectly reasonable.

But if you are looking for something more structured – a practice you learn in a complete form and then carry into your own life – Classical Hatha Yoga may be worth exploring.

So, what is happening this month?

This is where I would make life easy for you.

The programs, cities and dates change, so I don’t want to give you a list here that becomes stale two months from now. Instead, check the current schedule for what is happening in Pune, Mumbai, Nashik and other cities, as well as available live online programs.

See the practice.
See the dates.
See the location.
And if something feels right, learn it.
Then practise.
Simple.

A little word before you go

Sometimes, what we need is not another thing to keep up with, but one practice we can learn properly and return to on our own.

That is what I find compelling about these Classical Hatha Yoga programs.

Not because they promise to magically fix your life.

They don’t.

The practice still requires your participation.

But because they offer something rather rare these days:

Learn it once. Practise it for life.

And if you are in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai or Nashik, you don’t even have to go looking very far.

See what’s coming up.

Programs and dates change from month to month, so check the current schedule before registering.

If you feel like giving it a try, you can find more details here:

https://programs.yogavani.in/ref/happy
Use code HAPPY at checkout for an additional 5% discount.

And please, don’t save the link for “someday.”
We know how that story ends. 😄

Go see what’s happening this month.

A wise, old man seated on a wooden bench, covering himself with a blanket; interacting with those who came to meet, with a pat on the back, brief talk and a sense of humour. Such was his unassuming personality and behavior. The spiritual mentor of many Americans who visited India in the 1960s and 70s; tycoons like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg visited his ashram in India. Such was the greatness of his work. Let’s get to know this mysterious man, spiritual Guru Neem Karoli Baba, (also called Neem Karori Baba) through this biography.

A Glimpse of His Life

Born around 1900, in the Akbarpur village in the North Western provinces of British India, the birth name of Neem Karoli Baba (initially known as Laxman Das, and referred to as Maharaj-ji by his followers) was Lakshmi Narayan Sharma. He was born into a rich Brahmin family and his religion was Hinduism. His parents married him off at the age of 11, and years later he left his house to lead the life of a monk, then, at the request of his father, he returned and resumed his family life and had two sons and a daughter. During his journey as a monk, he influenced many lives and his philosophy spread to many parts of the world.

Story Behind His Name

According to a narrative by Ram Dass, one of the disciples of Neem Karoli Baba, after leaving his house in 1958, Laxman Das boarded a train without a ticket, for which he was forced out of the train in Neem Karoli village in Farrukhabad, UP. When he got off the train on the instruction of the conductor, the train did not start again. After many failed attempts of taking the train ahead without Neem Karoli Baba, someone advised taking him in, so that the train may start, and so it did when Neem Karoli Baba boarded the train again. He placed two conditions while getting inside the train; one that a railway station must be built for the residents of Neem Karoli and two, that the railways must treat sadhus with respect. His advice was followed, as per which, a station was built in the village and that’s why the people living there, gave him the name Neem Karoli.

Neem Karoli Baba as an Ascetic

Later, this ascetic wandered and stayed in many parts of North India. His place of sadhana was the Vavaniya village of Morbi in Gujarat. He followed the Bhakti yoga. He preached that service to mankind was the highest form of devotion to the Almighty. He was a devotee of Lord Hanuman.

In a book titled ‘Miracle of Love‘, compiled by Ram Dass, it has been stated that he did not give discourses, and that he would often sit or lie down on a wooden bench, with a plaid blanket wrapped around him. He was often seen sitting in silence, but those around him would experience joy and bliss. Neem Karoli Baba used to say that ego and attachment should be let gone, to understand God. According to him, what distinguishes a learned man from a fool is detachment and shedding of ego. He maintained that one should surrender to God, have faith and love for Him, and this is the way to get rid of unnecessary worries. He defied conventional patterns and descriptions, yet seemed to possess an omniscient awareness, guiding events and people effortlessly.

Interestingly Neem Karoli Baba was known by different names in different regions of India. His other names include Lakshman Das, Handi Wallah Baba and Tikonia Wallah Baba. In Gujarat, he was called Tallaiya Baba. Locals of Vrindavan called him Chamatkari Baba.

He left this world on September 11, 1973 in a hospital in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, after going into a diabetic coma. Earlier, he had experienced chest pain, for which he had visited a heart specialist in Agra. While returning to Kainchi from Agra, he had convulsions after which he was taken to Shri Dham Vrindavan. It is said that on being taken to hospital, the doctors said that he had gone into diabetic coma and started treating him. He rose for a few moments, pulled off the oxygen mask, asked for Ganga water, and was given regular water, after which he repeated Jaya Jagadish Hare many times, and left for his heavenly abode. At the time of death, his face was peaceful with no signs of pain.

His samadhi has been built in the Vrindavan ashram. He continues to live through his teachings and through his followers who respect and remember him and are working towards continuing his legacy.

Ashrams and Foundations

Ashrams of Neem Karoli Baba are located in Kainchi, Bhumiadhar, Kakrighat, Hanumangarhi in Kumaon Hills and Vrindavan, Lucknow, Shimla, Rishikesh, Neem Karoli village in Khimasepur, Farrukhabad and in Delhi. Outside India, his ashram is located in Taos, New Mexico. The ashrams in Kainchi and Vrindavan were built during his lifetime. 100 temples were built in his name. Today, his temple on Nainital Almora road is a place of pilgrimage for the locals and his devotees around the world. On June 15 every year, the Kainchi Dham Bhandara is held to celebrate the inauguration of this temple, and the event attracts more than 100,000 people.

Ram Dass and Larry Brilliant, two of his noted disciples established the Seva Foundation in Berkeley, California. It is an international health organization working towards the prevention and treatment of blindness. There is another foundation known as the Love Serve Remember Foundation, which was established in the late 2000s. It works towards preserving and spreading the teachings and philosophy of Neem Karoli Baba.

Notable Disciples and Followers

Celebrated figures like Steve Jobs had travelled to India to meet Neem Karoli Baba, but he had died a month before Jobs arrived. Mark Zuckerberg later visited Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in Kainchi. Larry Page and Jeffrey Skoll also visited the ashram. Hollywood actress Julia Roberts was deeply influenced by Neem Karoli Baba as well; she has spoken about being drawn to his photograph, an experience that led to her interest in Hinduism.

Spiritual gurus Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das and Jaya Sati Bhagavati, musicians Jai Uttal and Krishna Das, filmmaker John Bush and author Daniel Goleman, and notable people like Larry Brilliant and his wife Girija, and professor Dada Mukerjee, among others were disciples and followers of Neem Karoli Baba.

This goes on to say how far and wide, Neem Karoli Baba’s name and fame had reached. Through his life and work, he impacted several individuals across the globe and people from diverse sectors came to seek his blessings. The ashrams founded by his followers are running successfully and working towards the betterment of society. Here are a few interesting quotes by Maharaj-ji.

Here are a few books that offer a wealth of spiritual wisdom and personal transformation, focusing on the teachings of Neem Karoli Baba and his disciples:

With desires, Hatha yoga does not work. Today no one really knows Hatha yoga. It can’t work through books. They used to fast and use herbs. – Neem Karoli Baba

You get wisdom from suffering. You are alone with God when you are sick, in the cremation ground or hospital. You call on God when you suffer. – Neem Karoli Baba

You must accept the teachings of Christ and follow them. Christ said to be like a little child – never think or speak anything that could harm anyone. – Neem Karoli Baba

If the clay in a pot is unbaked, then when the pot breaks, the clay is reused. But if the pot is baked, then when it breaks, it is thrown away. – Neem Karoli Baba

Change is the way of the world, and if in this Kali Yuga (Dark Age) it has to go this way, let it go. Unless you are the Lord, you can’t stop it anyway, so why berate it? – Neem Karoli Baba

He was crucified so that his spirit could spread throughout the world. He sacrificed his body for the dharma. He never died, he never died. He is Atman (the Soul), living in the hearts of all. – Neem Karoli Baba

Money is never a problem. The difficulty is in the correct use of it. Lakhs and crores (large amounts) of rupees would come easily if they were going to be put to wise use. – Neem Karoli Baba

Even if a person hurts you, give him love. The worst punishment is to throw someone out of your heart… You should love everyone as God, and love each other. If you cannot love each other, you cannot achieve your goal. – Neem Karoli Baba

It is very difficult to know exactly what good should come out of a particular situation. To attempt to manipulate circumstances so your idea of good can come about, is to let the ego play God-and that, as you know, can and does backfire. – Neem Karoli Baba

You should do your work, be friendly to everyone, and never quarrel with anyone. People who are jealous of you will oppose you in various ways but do not take it to heart. Do your work like a great hero and all will be well for you. – Neem Karoli Baba

All religions are the same, they all lead to God. God is everybody… The same blood flows through us all, the arms, the legs, the heart, all are the same. See no difference, see all the same. – Neem Karoli Baba

The great sadhus don’t have a human body. They are omnipresent. If a saint changes form, he doesn’t necessarily have to take on a human body. The soul is the small form and the human body is the huge form. – Neem Karoli Baba

If you want to see God, kill desires. Desires are in the mind. When you have a desire for something, don’t act on it and it will go away. If you desire to drink this cup of tea, don’t, and the desire for it will go away. – Neem Karoli Baba

When a man has reached the point where he can sit in meditation for six months, there is no need of eating, no need of latrine or of rest. Only one drop of amrit nectar from the top of the head to the body keeps him alive. If a tiger eats that body there is no care, but only when the life comes back to the body will there be pain. – Neem Karoli Baba

Why do the same patterns keep showing up in your life?

Different people, different situations—but somehow the same struggles. Is it luck, fate… or karma? Sadhguru’s insights reveal karma as something far more empowering than most of us believe. These quotes will challenge the way you think about your choices and the life you’re creating.

Karma means you are the maker of your life. – Sadhguru

Karma means both action and memory. There is no memory without action and no action without memory. – Sadhguru

Every moment of your life, you perform action–physically, mentally, emotionally, and energy-wise. Each action creates a certain memory. That is karma. – Sadhguru

No matter what kind of karma you gathered in the past, this moment’s karma is always in your hands. – Sadhguru

Karma means your life is your making. Karmic accumulation can either be a Boost or Burden – that is your choice. – Sadhguru

Devotion demolishes karma and leads to liberation. – Sadhguru

Conscious action does not produce karma – reaction does. – Sadhguru

Whatever you do, just check – is it all about you, or is it for the wellbeing of All. This settles any confusion about good and bad karma. – Sadhguru

Karma functions through certain tendencies. But with some awareness and focus, you can push it in the direction that you wish. – Sadhguru

Old layers of karma can stick to you only if you keep adding new layers of karmic glue. – Sadhguru

Karma is not in your action – it is in your volition. It is not the content of your life but the context that creates karma. – Sadhguru

Of all kinds of karma, using occult forces for one’s own benefit or to the harm of others has the worst consequences for oneself. – Sadhguru

Karma is like old recordings that keep replaying. Yoga means to make life not just a replay but a profound possibility and experience. – Sadhguru

If you dismantle your karmic structure completely, you merge with existence. This is what mukti or ultimate liberation means – to become free from the very process of life, birth, and death. – Sadhguru

If your thought is powerful enough, if your visualization is powerful enough, it can even break the bonds of karma. – Sadhguru

Sadhana is done so that you create a certain sense of awareness, and you are hastening the process of the dissolution of karma so that your prarabdha gets finished faster and faster. – Sadhguru

You cross the limits of madness, then you become perfectly sane. You are born with the madness – the karma itself is madness. – Sadhguru

Karma is about shifting responsibility from heaven to yourself. In this, you become the very maker of your own destiny. – Sadhguru

Karma is your survival and your bondage. And if you handle it right, it can also be your liberation. – Sadhguru

If you rise above your likes and dislikes, your narrow ideas of “mine” and “not mine”, that is the end of karma. – Sadhguru

If you want to move in the direction of liberation, one of the first things that you need to do is to loosen the grip and shackle of karma. Otherwise, no movement will happen. – Sadhguru

By reflecting on these quotes, we gain a deeper understanding of karma’s principles, empowering us to make conscious decisions and cultivate a more purposeful approach to life.

Have you ever wondered why some people achieve their goals with remarkable clarity while others struggle despite working just as hard?

The difference often lies not just in what they do, but in the state of mind from which they act. Meditation can be a life-changing practice, helping reduce stress, bring clarity, and create a deep sense of inner peace. As your mind becomes focused, your energies naturally align with what truly matters, enabling you to move toward your goals with confidence and purpose.

We all have dreams and aspirations — big or small — that are deeply meaningful. Chit Shakti Meditation for Success, created by Sadhguru, is a guided practice that helps you gain clarity about your intentions, visualize your desired outcome, and consciously direct your energies toward achieving your goals.

Chit Shakti Meditation Success

This meditation is like a guided relaxation technique, in which we are instructed to deeply inhale and exhale while tensing and relaxing the muscles, one body part at a time. While practicing this meditation, we are guided into manifesting our goals or desires in our mindscape, so that they may turn into reality. Chit Shakti meditations, as per Sadhguru, are powerful tools to create what we desire, in our mindscape, so that it can find manifestation in actuality. These meditations help us be the master of our destiny.

In the Chit Shakti meditation for success, Sadhguru guides us into setting three goals. He says, we should set a short-term goal, something that we wish to achieve in the next few months and focus on it, be specific about what we really want, hold it in our mind and see it being accomplished. Next, he says, we should set a medium-term goal, something that we wish to achieve in the next 2-3 years, be specific about it, see it clearly and see it being accomplished. Then we should set a long-term goal, something that we wish to attain in the next 10-15 years, be specific about it and see it being accomplished. He further states that we should prefer to have a more inclusive goal as our long-term goal and wish for everyone’s well-being as part of this goal. He says we should experience the joy and well-being that is created by visualizing the accomplishment of our goals.

Apart from Chit Shakti meditation for success discussed in this article, there are other Chit Shakti meditations namely, one for health, which helps us attain overall well-being, one for love which can be used to attain love, and Chit Shakti meditation for peace, which helps us achieve peace. If you download the Sadhguru app, it will be easier for you to access the Chit Shakti meditations and practice them, anywhere, anytime.
